Chapter 16

Henley didn’t need dinner from Evan Cook, but she sure wasn’t going to back down from his stupid bet. She had just turned to go outside when she heard a strange scraping noise. “What’s that?”

Evan smiled.

“Mr. Cook, what is going on?”

He pointed.

Henley looked out the door and saw a truck with a plow on the front coming down the road. She gritted her teeth as she noticed the huge wave of snow it was creating. By the time it passed, there was a two-foot wall of ice and slush at the end of the driveway. Henley looked at the rented SUV, the pile, and back at the SUV. Then she turned her gaze on Evan. “You knew that was coming.”

He grinned. “Maybe.”

She rolled her eyes, then scowled as her phone vibrated again.

“Looks like I get to drive you back to your hotel.”

His infuriating grin swam in Henley’s vision, and she briefly thought about punching him, but decided against it. She didn’t want any evidence that she’d assaulted the great Evan Cook. Instead, she channeled her inner younger brother and raised her eyebrows. “You never said I couldn’t move the snow first.”

He opened his mouth to argue, and she stepped close and put a finger on his lips. “Shh, I won’t tell anyone you lost to a girl.”

He blinked.

“Now, where’s your shovel?”

“Shovel?” Evan huffed around her finger, his lips pressing against her skin. “Do you see the size of that driveway? We have a snow blower.”

“Fantastic, then show me to the snow blower.” She moved her finger, then patted his slightly stubbly cheek.

He caught her hand and held it as he gazed into her eyes. “Only if you say please.”

Butterflies beat like mad in her stomach. She ignored them and cocked her head to the side. “Or I could dump you on your head this time. Your choice.”

Evan kept hold of her hand and gently pressed his lips against the backs of her fingers. “Why are you so hard-headed?”

The butterfly wings beat faster, but two could play at this game. She stepped in and put her hand on his chest. She could feel his warmth through the button-down shirt. Her fingers slid along the soft fabric, and she looked into his brown eyes. She licked her lips. “Why are you so annoying?”

He grinned and leaned down, his head coming slowly toward hers. “Why are you—”

“Uncle Evan!” Daryl’s voice sounded from the kitchen.

Henley snatched her hand back, and Evan stepped away.

Footsteps announced Daryl’s arrival. He looked back and forth between the two adults. “Berry’s vomiting. She says she wants to go back to the hotel.”

“Probably all the carbs she’s been eating,” Henley muttered.

Evan sighed. “I guess I’ll go find the snow blower.”

“Grandpa gave it away,” Dylan said.

“He what?” Evan asked.

“He gave it away to a guy in the old neighborhood. Said the guy needed it more than he did.”

“Of course he did.” Evan reached for his own coat and hat. “I guess I’ll go find the shovels.”

Henley donned her coat. “Hey
